Updating PC Hardware or O.S - TIP!
All current Software Magic, Inc. PC software
products have a License Manager.
This License Manager initially generates
a unique Machine ID based on a number of characteristics of your PC
platform.
This Machine ID must be returned to:
smi@aii.com whereupon a corresponding 'unlock code' must be generated, and then returned
to you before the software will operate.
Should you change your hardware or O.S.
after this initial 'unlocking', the License Manager may be 'triggered' and
necessitate a new 'unlock' code! You can thus be left - for a time -
with your system non-operational.
We suggest the following:
Try to avoid getting in a situation where
your only working system has been 'upgraded' and you are left with nothing
operational. The best solution is to leave the current system untouched, and
upgrade - whether hardware or software - to a new platform.
These days (Feb 2006) BRAND NEW basic
DELL Dimension 1100/B110 systems can be purchased for as little as $299 -
including a 17" CRT Monitor! (IF you avoid unnecessary 'options'!). These
make great platforms for all Software
Magic programs.
Using this approach, you can continue to
process your Part Programs with the current system, while you get the new
system to operate in the same way. You will be able to check/copy over
settings in CONFIG.AI, copy your SYSDEF.DAT, posts, etc. - and assure
'everything works' - while you still have your original operating system
available for Production.
When you Upgrade in this manner, and you
are under a current Technical Support Agreement (TSA), simply notify smi@aii.com
that you are doing so -
and request temporary unlock codes as necessary. (Send the appropriate
Machine ID so we may return this 'unlock code').
When you are assured that the new system
is Operating 100%, FAX us a short note (407) 321-2648 - press SEND or START
to be transferred to a FAX line) on your Letterhead signed by your General
Manager, Purchasing Manager, Accounting Manager, etc. stating that the new
system is the one you will be using from now on, and that the software will
be removed from the old machine or otherwise retired after you receive a
permanent unlock code for the new machine. If you are under a current TSA,
this is all that is necessary to transfer over your current PC license to a
new PC.
